Not just a pretty head

Hannah and I are planning a series of portraits with hats and headpieces... Here are some of the pictures I've collected for inspiration...

Friday 27 March 2009

So it turns out there is a scientific explanation for all the garish, colourful, patterned, weird impulse buys sitting at the back of my closet....

I found an interesting article on Berlingske Tidende about the psychology of shopping. A new study by Minnesota University has shown that our shopping choices are directly influenced by our states of mind (well, I think all women would say they already know this...)

But what this study proved was that if you are feeling scared and anxious, you are most likely to make "safe" shopping decisions, follow the herd, and buy things for the acceptance of your peers. If on the other hand, you are feeling happy, accepted and in love... you will buy things that will make you unique and stand out.

So, to add a very cheesy conclusion... happiness is the key to style! (Aarh did I actually say that??)

Happy Friday everyone!

Mosaic mad

I found this Zimmermann bikini on net-a-porter and I think why I love it so much is because it reminds me of typical Barcelona modernist tiled floors...

Primavera is coming!!

Marble mad

I couldn't resist this €1 piece of scrap fabric at the Humana shop in el Borne... Maybe it's because I still had Martin Lamothe's marble-print dresses in my head...

Moda Fad 2009

Although I missed the actual fashion shows for this year's Moda Fad event, I swung by the showroom sale event to see the collections of the 20 or so young up and coming designers.

Some of my personal highlights were:

The structured, knitted, body-armour like pieces by designer Julia Triay, in shades of grey:

The delicate, folded and pleated leather bags and sweet, feminine lace necklaces and head jewellery by Arianne:

I also really liked the collection by "tu cara me suena" with its mix of draping, interesting cuts, and palette of soft powdery colours mixed with black... I spent a good while contemplating buying the grey and yellow (always a fail-proof combination of colours) vintage-print top below right.

As promised, here are some pictures from backstage at Gori de Palma's A/W 2009 show which was held on Monday at the 080 Barcelona Fashion.

Gori took inspiration from skinheads (checked shirts, white 'whitebeater' vests, suspenders, tight jeans, Harrington jackets and military boots) and new wave, styling the show with loafers and boots worn with white socks, and the girls with short-short hair on top with long bits of hair, 'mullets' worn to the sides and back. The line up included among others, Ritchie W (of S/S 2009 Burberry campaigns), and rising star Uliana Tikhova.

me encanta....

We spent this morning at the Encants market at Plaza Glories with Lina. For some reason we weren't having as much luck as usual with haggling, but I managed to leave with a faded pink old framed photograph of a ski-slope....

and an old pair of mens glasses.... which I'm going to turn into a Ann-Sofie Back inspired necklace, from her S/S 2005 collection. Will post a picture once it's done!

(maybe putting it into writing like this will hold me to actually finishing a DIY project for once??)

Martin Lamothe at 080 Barcelona Fashion

080 Barcelona Fashion, Barcelona's very own fashion week, took place this week. The project is spearheaded by the local council, and part of the Catalan Fashion Action Plan 2007-2010, aimed to revitalise the local textile sector. Local and international designers, including Martin Lamothe, Gori de Palma, Maikel Bongaerts, Aminaka Wilmont and Cecilia Sorensen were chosen to show their collections for A/W 2009 during the week.

I helped Gori de Palma's team with styling the show (pictures tomorrow) but here are some from Neomoda.com from the Martin Lamothe show, which blew me away!

Elena Martin's inspiration came from a road-trip in the dusty deserts of America, making references even down to the power-cables with her prints. The models were styled with greasy and matted straight hair, loafers in shades of brown, and nude tights with what looked like feathers inside the knees to give the appearance of dirt (but a lot better!)

How gorgeous are the sculpted patchwork leather dresses??
