All that glitters is gold

Glitter.... I used to pile the stuff on every morning to wear to school, paint it on my fingernails, and spend hours obsessing about the perfect glitter. My favourite used to be holographic silver. Then I forgot all about it.... but now, it's back, it's back, wohoo!

Uslu airlines

Best make-up related news of the year!  Paco Rueda at Jaume 1 has started selling Uslu Airlines nail varnishes, the best nailvarnishes in the world!  No other brand combines such amazing colours with long-lasting wear.  The colours are named after airports around the world too, which I like.  It's sort of like taking a little trip, just by painting your nails.  But a lot cheaper.
I've been wearing the MRK (Marrakech) Red for about two years straight, but now I'm going through a turquoise OSM (Mosul) by Bernard Wilhelm phase.

Sailor love

Just another reason for a weekend in Paris.... the Musee de la Marine in Paris is holding an amazing-looking exhibition on how naval uniforms have inspired fashion over the years, from portrayals of wholesome American sailors to homo-erotic fantasies of Jean-Paul Gaultier.

The museum is being quite modern in its promotion of the exhibition - note the exhibition's own blog, with interesting tid-bits of information and some gorgeous images from sailor fashion and the exhibition.

I loved the colour palettes at both Chloe and Danish designer Stine Goya's S/S 2009 shows, which featured shades of lemon, coral, burnt peach and gold, juxtaposed with a sheeny, dark, rich, blue. Makes me dream of Oriental holidays...

I present you... Camilla Staerk

Camilla Stærk is a Danish-born designer, currently living and working on her label Stærk in New York. She originally designed under a label named after her full name, but after it was bought by CS DK she made a quick exit. To add insult to injury, that label doesn't even exist anymore! Just proves that they should have listened to her...

Her collections are consistently inspired by strong (her name Stærk literally means 'strong' in Danish), powerful, interesting women in history, such as Karen Blixen, and always feature a subdued colour palette, using textures such as leather and lace to create a modernist, minimalist, clean but slightly dangerous (for the lack of a better word) silhouette. I get the feeling that she is a very personal designer... that she designs very much for herself. She is a big fan of headwraps, scarves and hats for example, which are always used in the styling of the shows.

Here are some of her offerings for S/S 09:

I'm hoping for Finnish relatives to send me mail lately (which they never do, so it's in vain, I know) because Julia Lundsten's Finsk, along with four other Finnish designers, have designed a range of stamps in Finland. Since discovering Julia Lundsten's brand, I have consistently followed and drooled over her designs online (and in Faith, where she does a diffusion range) which always combine an unexpected but harmonious juxtaposition of colours, finishes and materials. Manolo Blahnik has praised her work, citing it as "nothing anybody is doing at the moment, exquisite, divine, perfect."

I love these photographs by Lina Scheynius (some of which are in the latest issue of Another magazine) The shades of pink, Maria carla, and the almost eerie, sexy, absurd, poetic, tense, melancholic atmosphere that only hotel rooms with quilted blankets and old, patterned carpets with the right afternoon light can provide.

No hay vuelta

Extremely talented upcoming young designer Ida Johansson came to our poker-night last week and brought lovely surprises for me! A gorgeous dress, and prints of Carlo and I modeling her final collection last summer.

The print of the dress is something that my inner 13 year old will never stop lusting.... i.e., anything shiny, golden, and flower-print... even better if all at the same time! I think I'm going to combine it with some tougher elements like an 80s studded denim vest to tone down the flowery-ness every so slightly... or something grey, and woollen. Like a crazy librarian. Or wear it as Ida intended, with the sheer white dress over it. Though I love the print and shininess of it too much to hide it!

Mmmm... shiny flowers....

Here are some of the Mito Magico photos that Ida ended up using in her final presentation of the collection:

I'm still so surprised that she managed to can these pictures in about 2 hours of messing around in a field!

Here are some pictures of Ida's A/W 2009-10 show, which she presented at Cibeles Madrid fashion week!
